This course has been written to increase understanding of how racism shows up in an educational setting. In recent years there has been a national and global awakening on the impact of systemic racism in our society which has highlighted clear disparities in health, economic and educational outcomes for those from the global majority.

This course provides the foundations for educational practitioners to understand how some of these disparities have developed over time and how our role as educators to young people means we have a responsibility to understand how racism can be perpetuated under our current educational system. In order for students to feel safe and thrive in our environments they must feel valued and represented.

This course will help you to individually reflect on your role in ensuring anti-racist practice in the classroom and provide you with the knowledge and tools to move forward as a team benefitting everyone in your community.

The Anti-Racist School has been written for leadership, teaching and support staff in the primary and secondary sector. However, there will be plenty of information and reflection points that will be useful for Governors, parents, youth workers and anyone working with young people in a UK context. It is suitable for both those who are at the very start of their understanding of anti-racism and settings who wish to drive their practice forward.

  • ✅ As educators and caregivers, we want to ensure the young people we teach and look after are treated fairly and given the best chances to succeed. Students who experience racism need to be confident the staff around them are aware of the issues they may face.

✅ Racism is not an easy or comfortable subject to discuss and there has been a tendency for institutions to shy away from the topic in the hope that it will then not be an issue however we know this is not a useful or acceptable strategy and will undoubtedly lead to long term problems.

✅ As your students become increasingly aware of how disparities impact them you will, rightly so, find they begin to speak out more and challenge problematic teaching or comments.

✅ This course will help you start to address and uncover some of the ways in which students have been overlooked and interrogate your own behaviours which may be challenge at first but ultimately lead to a more honest and inclusive environment.

  • ✅ Increased understanding of terminology associated with anti-racist practice.

✅ Greater awareness of how racism manifests in your educational setting.

✅ Targets for updating curriculum to reflect a diverse range of voice.
